My Story

My Story

Helping makers create beautiful things since 2015!

Hi, I'm Michele, the maker behind Knotting Hillbilly.

People often ask where the name came from.

Believe it or not, it started as a bit of a joke.

One afternoon I was sitting on my verandah in the hills of Far North Queensland wondering if I could still remember how to tie macrame knots.

I'd taught myself macrame when I was about sixteen years old and, like many hobbies, life became busy and it was put aside for many years.

So I picked up some cord and started knotting again.

To my surprise, it all came flooding back.

Even today, my mum still has one of the very first macrame pieces I made as a teenager. I love that it's survived all these years because it reminds me that creativity never really leaves us—it just waits patiently until we're ready to pick it up again.

As I sat on my verandah happily knotting away, the name Knotting Hillbilly popped into my head. Living out in the hills of Far North Queensland, it just seemed to fit.

The name stuck.

And in 2015, Knotting Hillbilly officially became a business.

Why I Started Knotting Hillbilly

When I first started selling macrame kits and supplies, finding quality macrame cord and materials in Australia wasn't easy.

Like many Australian macrame makers, I often struggled to source the products I wanted without paying expensive overseas shipping or waiting weeks for them to arrive.

I realised there were probably plenty of other people feeling exactly the same way.

So I decided to change that.

My goal was simple.

To make quality macrame cord, supplies, DIY macrame kits and macrame patterns more accessible to Australian makers, while creating projects that were enjoyable, achievable and inspiring.

Since then, Knotting Hillbilly has grown into much more than an online store.

It's become a creative community built around sharing skills, encouraging creativity and helping people discover the satisfaction of making something with their own hands.

A Decade of Creativity

Since 2015, I've been fortunate enough to help thousands of people discover the joy of macramé through DIY kits, PDF patterns, workshops, fibre supplies and handmade creations.

Over the years my business has continued to evolve.

My patterns have become more detailed.

My kits have become more refined.

And my love of teaching and designing has only grown stronger.

Whether you're tying your very first knot or looking for your next creative challenge, my aim is always the same:

To create projects that are beautiful, achievable and genuinely enjoyable to make.

I also believe the things we create should have purpose.

Sometimes that's a beautiful wall hanging that transforms a room.

Sometimes it's a practical market bag, a phone bag or a plant hanger you'll use every day.

For me, handmade should be both beautiful and useful.

Every Kit Is Packed By Me

Knotting Hillbilly is still a one-woman business, and every order is packed by hand here in Far North Queensland.

I individually measure and cut every length of cord before carefully packing it into your kit.

Each kit is neatly wrapped and packed into a kraft gift box before being wrapped again for its journey to you.

It's a little more work, but I believe opening your parcel should feel just as special as making the project inside.

It's the little details that matter.

Looking Ahead

While macrame will always be at the heart of Knotting Hillbilly, I'm constantly learning and exploring new areas of fibre art.

You'll see new DIY kits, refreshed patterns, curated fibre packs and workshops joining the collection, along with future adventures into weaving, spinning and other fibre crafts that inspire me.

Creativity is a journey, and I'm looking forward to sharing the next chapter with you.

Thank You

Running a small creative business for over a decade simply wouldn't have been possible without wonderful customers.

Whether you've been with me since the beginning or you've only just discovered Knotting Hillbilly...

Thank you.

Every order, every message and every photo you share of your finished projects means more than you know.

I hope that when you open one of my kits, you don't just receive a box of materials.

I hope you discover the joy of slowing down, learning something new and creating something you're genuinely proud of.

Because there really is something special about standing back, looking at something you've made with your own hands and thinking...

"I made that."

Happy Knotting,

Michele
